The CRAACO speaking faculty primarily focused their sessions on helping to plan for the convergence journey of research and care from multiple perspectives.

The event began with an introduction on making the business case for clinical research in healthcare settings by the 2024 co-chairs, Dr Kimberly Barnholt, Genentech, and Jeff James, Wilmington Health System.

Jennifer Byrne, Javara, and Mr James then went into a retrospective on integrating clinical research as a care option within a healthcare system, before a conversation amongst Novartis, Genentech, Boehringer Ingelheim and Merck on the pharma perspectives of clinical research as an option for care.

Health system representatives spoke candidly about the operations, internal structure and collaborations required to really offer clinical trials to the patients in their respective health systems, with lessons learned for others on how to operationalize access to clinical trials as a care option.

Henry Ford Health System returned to CRAACO to give an update on their journey integrating clinical trials into clinical care across their multi-hospital system. Duke University School of Medicine, and Wilmington Health System addressed what they are doing to prepare the next generation of physician researchers.

Duke-Margolis, Manatt Health and Duke University School of Medicine convened to outline the financial barriers in getting more coverage for patients in clinical trials.

The event also applied a specific focus to the ways in which clinical trials could be brought to more patients, particularly in underreached and under-served communities. Elligo Health Research and Evidation spoke to the work they were leading in applying virtual clinical trial models and decentralized trials, respectively, to support and drive the enrollment of more diverse patient communities.

Montefiore Einstein Cancer Center showcased the work it was doing to get early stage clinical trials to the underserved communities in its care orbit. Merck and N-Power presented how their collaboration enabled the pharma organization to build partnerships with community sites.

Genentech partnered with Publicis Health to help underserved and remote populations gain access to clinical research. Patient advocate Karen Peterson, Karen’s Club, told the CRAACO audience about the journey she went on in obtaining data, to find the best clinical trial that ended up saving her life.

Sanofi and UT Health San Antonio each focused on data: Sanofi detailed how they were returning individual clinical trial data to participants, and UT Health San Antonio went over the data quality and scalability challenges present when using RWD from EHRs. Manatt Health presented legislative and regulatory updates on clinical trial diversity issues, and Tufts CSDD gave their insights into research on evolving trial partnerships models.

We are pleased to share highlights from CRAACO 2024. A big thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s event.
