The Role of Chinese Biotechs in the BD Process for Immuno-Oncology

Andrew Baum, MD is a former surgeon who has leveraged his deep clinical and scientific expertise to become a visionary leader in the financial services industry and biopharmaceutical sector. He has more than 30 years of experience and a proven track record in leading high-impact research projects and teams, developing robust strategies, and forging global partnerships that have expanded markets and increased investor returns. He is skilled in Equity Research, Hedge Funds, Investment Banking, Strategy, and Equities. Dr Baum joins Pfizer as Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer, Executive Vice President. He joins Pfizer from Citi where he was the Global Head of Healthcare Research for Citi Research, where he joined in 2011. Prior to this, he covered European Pharmaceuticals at Morgan Stanley for 14 years. He also worked as a UK Pharmaceuticals and Biotechnology analyst at Salomon Brothers. From 1994 to 1996, Dr Baum was a practicing physician at the Royal National Orthopedic Hospital in London and at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. Dr Baum has been recognized as the top ranked European Pharmaceutical Analyst six times in the Developed Europe & Emerging EMEA Research Survey, which allows management firms to provide views on the advice they receive from research analysts. His team of analysts consistently ranked in the top three teams in external EU and global investor polls (Institutional Investor, Greenwich, and Reuters). He has been widely sought after to share his insights with the most senior levels of management within the healthcare industry. He has regularly lectured for a number of prestigious organizations including IO360°, The British Institute of Comparative Law, the World Vaccine Congress as well as occasional presentations to some of the leading management consultancies. Dr Baum holds an MA degree in Physiological Sciences and a BM ChB degree from Oxford University and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine.

Meeta Chatterjee, PhD has served as the Senior Vice President of Global Business Development since March, 2019. She was previously Head of Strategy, Transactions, and Operations within the Business Development and Licensing (BD&L) group at Merck Research Labs. Dr Chatterjee oversaw discovery and late-stage transactions worldwide, as well as early-stage transactions in key geographies. She also was responsible for Merck’s BD&L governance, oversight, and control as well as out-licensing efforts.Dr Chatterjee has over 30 years of broad strategic and operational experience in pharmaceutical research and development, mergers and acquisition evaluation, in-licensing, and externalization activities. Over the course of her extensive career, she has led/contributed to >150 transactions/collaborations with a cumulative financial value of ~$1 billion USD. She has led research efforts in the areas of hypertension, atherosclerosis, and obesity, and was an integral contributor to the discovery of ZETIA and ZONTIVITY.Dr Chatterjee received her undergraduate education at St. Xavier’s University in Ahmedabad, India, and Rutgers University (BA, Hons Physics), New Jersey, USA. She received her Doctor of Philosophy in Physiology from Rutgers University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Physiology at the University of Virginia, School of Medicine, Virginia, USA. Dr Chatterjee is also active in industry and licensing focused organizations.

Angus Grant, PhD, joined BeiGene in June 2020 as Chief Business Executive, bringing in more than 25 years of experience across multiple key functions in the biotech industry, including business development, alliance management, research and development, and regulatory affairs . In this role, Dr Grant oversees business development and alliance management, and help drive external innovation and investment in other companies to guide BeiGene’s global growth strategy. Prior to joining BeiGene, Dr Grant was the CEO of the Dementia Discovery Fund (DDF), a specialist venture capital fund focused on therapeutics for age-related dementias and neurodegenerative disease. Before that, Dr Grant spent 12 years at Celgene (now a Bristol Myers Squibb company) serving various executive roles, including Corporate Vice President of Business Development and Vice President, Regulatory Affairs. Earlier in his career, Dr Grant worked in business development and regulatory roles at Novartis, Merck KGaA, Rhone Poulanc-Rohrer, SmithKline Beecham, and the US Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Biologics. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Board for Toronto Innovation and Acceleration Partners. Dr Grant received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Richmond and a PhD in Anatomy and Immunology from the Medical College of Virginia, and completed his postdoctoral training at the National Cancer Institute.

Weimin Tang, PhD is currently EVP of I-MAB Biopharma, a clinical stage biotech company focus on Immunology and Oncology. He served as Interim CEO/Head of US Business Development, Jiangsu Hengrui Medicine previously and build Hengrui global business development team and clinical operation in Princeton, NJ. He was trained as cancer biologist with PhD in Biochemistry at Rutgers University. He has accumulated more than 20 years of research and business management experiences with global pharmaceutical companies and Biotechs such as Synaptic Pharmaceutical, BMS, JNJ, Sanofi, Crown Biosciences, Hengrui Medicine and I-MAB Biopharma. Through his industry career, he expanded his function from basic biology to high throughput screening, DMPK and business management. Dr. Tang received his Bachelor’s Degree from Zhejiang University, Master Degree from Chinese Academy of Sciences.
