The 2025 Patients as Partners Europe conference marked nine years of bringing together leaders and experts in pharma R&D and patient advocacy. The event demonstrated strong progress and highlighted case examples of how patient involvement leads to greater access and efficiencies in clinical trials and better health outcomes for patients.

On Day One, the program opened with remarks from patient engagement leaders in pharma, CRO and patient advocacy, followed by a Patient Keynote from Harry Verbunt on his participation in a clinical trial and his thoughts on what the industry must prioritize in clinical research for patient participation. Panels discussed patients’ fears of and preferences for clinical research, and developing multi-stakeholder partnerships for the benefit of patients.

Day One speakers presented on: transitioning from patient-centricity to integrated patient engagement; integrating patients throughout clinical development; combining patient engagement and experience data; using patient experience data to assess product tolerability; harnessing digital innovation to elevate patient insights and outcomes; implementing solutions and technologies for reducing patient burden; mastering protocol complexity to reduce patient burden; embedding patient archetypes in R&D; scaling global insights; creating more efficient patient screening strategies; using AI case studies to speed up research; and engaging the community in clinical trials.

On Day Two, Patient Keynote Peter DiBiaso used his experience as a pharma professional and patient advocate to guide the audience on centering patients in clinical research. The day’s panels focused on creating an environment that facilitates patient insights for clinical trial development and measuring/demonstrating the value of patient engagement across the medicine life-cycle.

Speakers presented on: developing an end-to-end matrix approach for engagement; building partnerships to integrate patient expertise; mapping the patient experience journey; engaging patients digitally; taking a behavioral science approach to finding trusted messengers for RWD studies; applying AI to enhance engagement and recruitment; overcoming barriers to global recruitment; involving patients in health technology assessments; and scaling study participant feedback questionnaires.
