Setting new standards in information exchange for the pharmaceutical and biotech industry
Blog Posting from Audrey Erbes for New Paradigms 2013
January 4, 2013
A blog posting regarding the upcoming New Paradigms to Fund Biotech conference. Jan 7-9th, 2013 in the Marines Memorial Club & Hotel, San Francisco.
As promised I’ve collected all the events for the first quarter of 2013 so you can carry out your New Year’s resolution to attend more industry programs to increase your knowledge and skills as well as strengthen your professional network. Now there’s an excellent array of meetings starting the week of Jan. 6th in San Francisco where you can achieve these goals even if you aren’t attending the JP Morgan meeting which is limited in invited attendees. Historically, this latter conference was the only meeting when it was the “H&Q” (Hambricht and Quist) investment conference and, subsequently, the JP Morgan Healthcare Conference until about 6 years ago. There was a tightening of requirements to receive invitations as the St. Francis Hotel hallways failed to expand to accommodate the “wannabe” attendees and their networking at the meeting. The St. Francis lobby was crushing to pass through as nonattendees crowded there to buttonhole passing registered attendees.
It was not too surprising that many firms rented meeting rooms in Union Square hotels to accommodate private meetings planned months ahead of the life science week. Even the rather luxurious Monday night event at City Hall complete with violinists playing on the staircase sponsored by JP Morgan over the years disappeared as attendees was lured to smaller more intimate receptions and in recent years alternative conferences to accommodate all the professionals who wanted to meet that week and carry out the business of finding funding.
Competing conferences started to appear over 5 years ago. These allowed companies not invited to present to investors at the JP Morgan conference to get an airing in front of them in other hotels within easy walking distance. Since tens of thousands of life science professionals now flock to San Francisco the second week in January, there’s a broad array of meetings and conferences and receptions from which to choose. The choices are many so one must do some research and analysis to plan a schedule starting with Sunday and ending Thursday, Jan. 10. I’ve included detailed information in the attached listing of Audrey’s Picks.
In my search of alternatives to JP Morgan I learned of the New Paradigms to Fund Life Science Innovation conference being held January 8-9, 2013 at the Marines’ Memorial Club & Hotel. This conference organized by The Conference Forum is guided by key individuals from biotech, pharma and the investment community to advance R&D through alternative sources of funding, non-traditional partnering strategies and regulatory insights. What I especially like about this program is the matching of content with critical needs for start ups and emerging companies and stakeholders concerned about the decrease in traditional venture funding levels.
The organizers have provided the agenda as a whole but, also recognizing the need for flexibility in individual schedules, offer its content in ala carte segments. There’s an intensive one-day preconference, standalone workshop focused on building a biotech. The organizers have offered special discounts to the entire conference as well segments of interest with codes for Audrey’s Network. The details and pricing are listed below.
